In my couples and family work, I conceptualize the relationship as the client, rather than focusing on one individual as the “identified patient.” Because of this relational focus, and because most insurance companies do not recognize relationship growth, communication work, or systems-based therapy as medically necessary treatment, I do not accept insurance for couples or family therapy sessions.
This allows the work to remain self-pay, which provides several important benefits:
No Diagnosis Requirement: We are not required to assign a mental health diagnosis to one partner in order to justify treatment.
Privacy: Your relational work remains confidential and is not submitted into insurance databases.
Clinical Flexibility: We can determine the frequency, duration, and focus of sessions based on what best supports your relationship, rather than limitations imposed by insurance coverage.
Although I do not bill insurance directly for couples or family therapy, I am happy to provide a detailed superbill (itemized invoice) that you may submit to your insurance company or use with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), if applicable. Reimbursement is determined solely by your insurance provider, and I encourage you to verify your out-of-network benefits in advance. I am also available to assist with documentation if needed.
Payment is due at the time of service, and clients remain responsible for any unpaid balances.
